“…and does PAD make life easier? There’s no question that it does! PAD enables me to do more single visit endodontics. It (PAD) is the future. We can’t go back. Every day I have patients in my chair telling me that a piece of their tooth has been weakened by too much invasive drilling and undercutting. PAD is a significant step forward towards minimally invasive dentistry.”

P.A.D stands for Photo-Activated Oral Disinfection and is used to improve restorative success in caries and endodontic treatment by eliminating all species of oral bacteria on demand: stopping decay, saving demineralised tissue and encouraging natural remineralisation.

How does P.A.D work?

P.A.D technology is based on two components: an aqueous solution of dilute, medical grade tolonium chloride (a vital stain) and a red light system of a specific wavelength to activate the P.A.D solution. Introduced into dental hard tissue, the P.A.D solution selectively targets and tags all bacteria. When the solution is activated by the P.A.D light it releases singlet oxygen which ruptures the cell membranes of bacteria killing them in seconds. P.A.D. solution selectively eliminates all bacteria and, unlike other methods of disinfection, does not affect any other normal tissue nor does it stain the gingivae or restorations.

What are the benefits of P.A.D to the dentist?
  • Killing bacteria prior to final restoration will improve your chances of long-term success by reducing, or eliminating altogether, the risk of secondary infection
  • P.A.D saves time by enabling treatments in a single visit
  • P.A.D treatment needs minimal invasion and is a simple, quick adjunct to your usual restorative procedure
  • P.A.D does not require practice registration with the Healthcare Commission; nor any safeguards usually associated with lasers.
  • P.A.D light generates no heat whatsoever
  • P.A.D is painless and welcomed by patients who readily understand the benefit of disinfection
  • P.A.D is safe, with no known side effects
  • The P.A.D unit is portable and battery operated for maximum flexibility and convenience
  • P.A.D tips are single use and disposable
What are the benefits of P.A.D to patients?
  • Less need for anaesthetic
  • Less invasive cavity preparation
  • Less likelihood of recurring caries
  • Less risk of pulpal exposure in treating deep decay
  • Less risk of losing a tooth
  • Less trauma for children and dental phobics
  • Less likelihood of failed root canal treatment
  • Less time to complete root canal treatment
